A Romantic Getaway, Torchwood Style

This month’s brand-new Torchwood release is a Valentine’s special, set at a couple’s getaway. Torchwood’s director Yvonne Hartman (Tracy-Ann Oberman) and scientific officer Tommy Pierce (Timothy Bentinck) are the latest guests to check in, as they take a break from work to indulge in romance. 

Or at least, that’s what they want people to think. There’s something sinister going on at this exclusive estate, and the two Torchwood agents are undercover to find out what – if they can keep up their cover story. 

Inseparable guest stars Jaye Griffiths (who regular Big Finish listeners will know as Eighth Doctor Adventures companion Audacity) as Gloria, the retreat’s resident ‘love guru’. The cast also includes Ania Marson (The Witcher) as Victoria, Rameet Rauli (Find Me in Paris) as Shannon, and Jason Watkins (McDonald & Dodds) as Nicholas.

Lead actor Tracy-Ann Oberman said: “Yvonne and Tommy are quite mismatched, although they know each other extremely well. Underneath Tommy's bluff exterior, because he’s seen Yvonne all the way from the new girl to the very quick rise up the Torchwood ranks, he really respects and admires Yvonne, but also feels protective of her.” 

Co-writer Helen Marshall added: “It’s a romantic comedy with very little romance in it. What I really like about writing for Tommy and Yvonne is they have a strange sort of work marriage, but they are completely different people, and it’s not particularly equal – Yvonne is definitely in charge. 

“Yvonne is ambitious. She’s willing to sacrifice those around her. She really doesn’t care who gets hurt with what she has planned. And Tommy is like that on-the-brink-of-retirement cop in all the buddy cop movies. He has seen things. He is ready to get out. But he’s maybe also a little bit warmer and gentler than he lets on in the beginning.”
