Alex Macqueen is a Master of his craft

"Hello, you!" Since first taking on the role in 2012’s UNIT: Dominion, Alex Macqueen has become a firm favourite among Big Finish listeners, delivering a charismatic and unpredictable incarnation of the renegade Time Lord across multiple ranges and series.

His portrayal has taken him from battling the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) in his debut, through the epic Dark Eyes saga opposite the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann), and into celebrated releases including 2021’s anniversary special Masterful, which brought together multiple incarnations of the Master.

After a four-year break from the role, Macqueen returned for The Stuff of Legend, the landmark 25th anniversary celebration that saw him perform both in the studio and live onstage at London’s Cadogan Hall in September 2024. It was the company’s first-ever live Doctor Who recording.

“I’ve played the Master for over a decade now, but it’s getting on for four or five years since I last recorded as him,” said Macqueen. “So coming back to it was a real delight and a thrill. I’d forgotten just how fun he is to play.”

The live performance at Cadogan Hall proved to be a memorable experience for both cast and audience alike. “It was absolutely packed,” Macqueen recalled. “I was taken aback by how full it was. The sides were full, the main body was full, the back end was full. It was quite intimidating at first, but it went very well – there was such a warm response and lots of good reactions.”

Doctor Who Magazine praised the performance, noting: “Alex Macqueen has firmly cemented his status as a truly great Master!” Macqueen is probably best known to TV viewers for his roles in The Thick of It, Hunderby and The Inbetweeners. His extensive theatre credits include work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

Both the studio and live versions of Doctor Who: The Stuff of Legend are available now on download to own and collector's edition CD box sets exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.
