Peter Davison stars as the Fifth Doctor in the forthcoming box set, Doctor Who – The Fifth Doctor Adventures: In The Night. Joining him are Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton as loyal companions Tegan and Nyssa.

The opening four-parter, Pursuit of the Nightjar, written by Tim Foley, is set between the 1983 Doctor Who TV stories Snakedance and Mawdryn Undead. When the TARDIS team find themselves on an empty spaceship in the far future, little do they realise they’re about to become part of a historic game of cat-and-mouse.

Pursuit Of The Nightjar by Tim Foley

The story of the Nightjar has been told for many years. A spaceship helmed by the legendary Captain Goben on a vital mission of mercy, delivering medical supplies to a distant colony in the middle of devastating war, an act of bravery that triggers the end of the conflict.

At her heels throughout the journey, her pursuer, the spaceship Nemesis, helmed by the dogged Captain Eslo, never quite able to catch her target.

The Doctor’s always wanted to witness these historic events. And now, alongside Nyssa and Tegan, he’s got his chance.

But history might just have other ideas.

Producer David Richardson said: “I’m a big fan of dark and claustrophobic Doctor Who. I’m also a big fan of intense character drama, especially those with a small cast given room to shine.

“Tim Foley delivered exactly my favourite kind of script. I knew it was special before we got into studio, but it shone even brighter in front of the mic. Janet Fielding was especially eager to point out how great she thought it was — and I agree wholeheartedly!”

Writer Tim Foley added: “My very first Doctor Who VHS was Snakedance. I had no idea what was going on but I was instantly drawn to the three fabulous leads. All of these years later, I’m delighted to have now written for this trio! I wanted to show how hard life in space could be. David Richardson has assembled a fantastic guest cast for a voyage like no other...”
