The Seventh Doctor’s spa day 

The Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and his companion, the rebellious young Ace (Sophie Aldred), are taking some time out in a luxury retreat as their latest adventure begins. But the R&R doesn’t last for long – they soon find themselves tormented by a sinister alien creature. 

Alixion is the latest release in Big Finish’s popular The Lost Stories range, which takes tales that were planned for the classic era of Doctor Who but never produced, and adapts them into full-cast audio dramas. 

This adventure was originally commissioned from writer Robin Mukherjee in 1989 but was shelved due to the TV show’s cancellation. Mukherjee has now adapted the script himself, making his Big Finish debut.

Checking into a luxury health spa for a little rest and recreation, the Doctor and Ace find themselves at the mercy of a malign entity that craves the conquest of time and space. 

Exploiting their memories and regrets, the queen of the hive, which hides behind the polished walls of the spa, forces them to confront their deepest fears as she steals the Doctor’s life force to spread her powers across the universe. 

Sylvester McCoy said: “I wasn’t aware that this idea had come to fruition way back in 1989; if we’d have carried on with the fourth season, we would have done this story, and it was abandoned, and now they've brought it back. And it’s great, it’s a lovely story, full of humour and mystery, and wonderfully, wonderfully written.” 

His co-star Sophie Aldred added: “It’s thrilling to think that this would have been what was ahead for Ace and the Doctor! I love this story because there are a lot of facets to Ace’s character here. It’s a very complex, psychological script.”
