Where can I listen to Big Finish for free? 

For over twenty-five years, Big Finish has been producing acclaimed audio dramas set in the worlds of Doctor Who, Blake’s 7, and more. With such a large back catalogue, it can be hard to know where to start. Here are a few opportunities to dip your toes into the water by listening to Big Finish audio dramas commitment (and cost) free:

The Big Finish for Free! page offers a collection of audios that you can add to your account and download at no cost. 

This includes a selection of full-cast Doctor Who audio dramas, including The Four Doctors, which sees the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Doctors team up against the Daleks, and The Five Companions, which is set during the events of the 20th anniversary TV story The Five Doctors. 

You can also find excerpts from many of our Doctor Who adventures, as well as from stories from related spin-offs and across the other worlds of Big Finish. If you’re unsure about which range to listen to next, then downloading the free excerpts allows you to try some out first.

A large selection of Big Finish’s back catalogue is available to stream for free on Spotify. 

This includes the first 50 Doctor Who – Monthly Range dramas, the first series of the fan-favourite Eighth Doctor and Lucie Miller adventures, and many more stories from the worlds of Doctor Who. 

You can also find free stories from the Dark Shadows, Sherlock Holmes, Survivors and Space: 1999 ranges.

In this official podcast, Colin Baker introduces fan-favourite stories from Big Finish’s Doctor Who ranges, presented in full alongside insightful behind-the-scenes interviews. 

It’s a great way to get a weekly fix of some of our best full-cast audio adventures in time and space, with stories featuring David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Tom Baker, Paul McGann, and other stars of the TV series.

The BBC’s official podcast app BBC Sounds has a selection of Big Finish’s full-cast Doctor Who audios available to stream for free. 

The stories available here change over time but currently include two New Series box sets in their entirety: Christopher Eccleston’s Big Finish debut adventure Ravagers and the first Classic Doctors, New Monsters set, which pits the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors against villains including the Weeping Angels and the Judoon. 

Other highlights include Out of Time, which features David Tennant and Tom Baker’s Doctors teaming up against the Daleks, and Mind of the Hodiac, a Sixth Doctor story written by Russell T Davies.

Since 2016, Big Finish has annually held the Paul Spragg Memorial Short Trip Opportunity, a competition for new writers to submit an original Doctor Who short story. 

Each year’s winning entry has been produced as an audiobook and made available to download for free. These short but powerful stories include Doctors and companions from the classic and new eras of the show and can all be found on our Short Trips page.

This includes Fifth Doctor adventure Cuddlesome and Big Finish's first UNIT story The Coup, as well as further full-cast audio dramas featuring Doctors and companions from the classic era of Doctor Who. 

There are also free short adventures with the characters from Sherlock Holmes, Dark Shadows, and The Confessions of Dorian Gray. These snippets are a great way to begin immersing yourself in a new Big Finish range.
